Dusting Do’s and Don’t’s

By June 23, 2022No Comments

For a lot of us, spring time is allergy time. One way to ease your symptoms is to rid your house of dust. These tiny particles come in from outside and fill our home without us even realizing it. Dust is made up of a lot of different particles and it varies from season to season and region to region. You can expect most dust contains dead skin, soil particles, fibers from clothing, hair and pollen just to name a few.

Properly removing dust from your home will help to improve the air quality and cleanliness of your home. Here are some do’s and don’t’s to keep in mind when you start diligently dusting:

DON’T Use Feather Dusters

Feather dusters and dry cloths just move dust from one area to another. The dust will reenter the air supply to inevitably settle in your lungs. Use a damp cloth or microfiber rags to wipe up flat surfaces that gather dust.

DO Utilize Your Vacuum

Your vacuum might just be your best weapon against dust.If your machine has attachments, use them. You can get all those hard to reach places and end your dusting marathon with a slow and steady vacuuming of your carpet.

DON’T Dust Randomly

Work from top to bottom. Even with the best techniques some of the dust will get stirred up as you clean. Chances are it will settle below. Start by dusting the ceiling fan and the ceiling corners. End with a thorough vacuuming.

DO Use Cleaning Solutions

Dust is notorious for sticking to certain surfaces like baseboards. Use your favorite spray to help collect all the dust so no particle is left behind.

DON’T Forget Hard to Reach Places

Dust sure takes advantage of the ‘out of sight, out of mind’ mentality. Here are some of the places dust may be hiding and slowly collecting:

  • Baseboards and Trim
  • Window Blinds
  • Ceiling Fan
  • Tops of Cabinets
  • Vents
  • Behind Appliances
  • In Carpet Fibers

DO Keep Your Carpet Clean

Most of the dust in our home eventually settles down into our carpet, only to get rustled and kicked back into the air with every step. Keeping your carpets clean really helps to stay on top of those dust bunnies. Use your vacuum at least weekly and call in the pro’s regularly to successfully clear those carpets of harmful dust particles.
