Mistakes Leading to Basement Flooding

By June 23, 2022No Comments

Disasters like flooding are unavoidable in a lot of cases. However, many times it is neglect and ignorance that is our downfall. You might not believe it, but you can take action to prevent home basement flooding. Sure, you can’t be expected to control the weather; but you can be sure that you are ready for it.

Home Inspections

Being a homeowner is no walk in the park. From serious disasters to light bulb changes- it all falls on you. It must be some unwritten law that when one thing goes wrong- everything seems to go wrong. When it rains it pours, I guess (flooding pun intended). To keep on top of all impending disasters, great or small, it is always a good idea to get your home frequently inspected.

The truth is, home inspections are done all too seldom and not so thoroughly. You might think you know everything about your home because you did your homework before moving in. But normal wear and tear can take a serious toll. At least consider the big things: your home’s foundation, water and sewer lines and devices like hot water heaters. These are all things that need serious attention and maintenance over the years.

Getting your home inspected by a professional can save you from a disaster. Basement flooding is not always due to heavy rain. It can also be caused by cracks in the foundation allowing groundwater to seep through; cracked or broken pipes and water lines; and sewage tank overflow. Make sure you know your home so you can protect it from damage.

Plumbing Habits

Basement flooding is bad enough with just water- NO ONE should ever have to endure flooding by sewage *shudder*. Mindless habits- that you might be guilty of- can be severely damaging to your plumbing. To avoid burst pipes, sewage backup and non-weather related flooding here are some habits to break:

  • Pouring grease, fats, and oils down the sink
  • Flushing anything other than toilet paper and human waste
  • Not using drain screens
  • Waiting for a clog to use drain cleaners

Planning ahead

Disastrous situations can be much more manageable when you have a plan. One of the best things you can do to prepare for home disaster is to understand your home. You need to know if your home has any areas of weakness. Homes have different susceptibilities based on when they are built and where they are located. Your insurance coverage should reflect these susceptibilities. Once you know what you might be up against, it will be much easier to make a plan. These plans could include prevention methods as well as family and financial plans in worst case situations.
