It’s that time of year to get ready for spring-cleaning. I don’t know about you, but I’m one of those crazy people that gets overly excited about spring, and yes: even spring-cleaning. While the process isn’t thrilling, I love thinking about a fresh, clean house just in time for the fresh, warm weather. Here is a basic checklist to help make your spring-cleaning experience a good one:
Rule one of dusting: work top to bottom. Start with your ceiling fan and light fixtures. Don’t forget the corners of the ceiling that love to trap dust. Once the ceiling is taken care of, pay special attention to books and decor on shelves. Use a vacuum to gather the loose stuff, then follow up with a light solution on grimy areas and a dry cloth elsewhere.
It is time to give those walls the wiping they deserve. Kitchen and bathroom walls need special attention. If water or grease soaks into those walls it can build up and lead to big problems like mold. I like to pretend that I am prepping the walls for a paint job. Don’t just scrub them but look for holes or cracks to correct as well.
The product you use on your windows will depend on the thickness of the buildup. You can use simple sprays or even thick pastes. Find what will work best for you and get that glass sparkling.
Use cleaners specific to wood cleaning for a good polish. If you are ready to really see those tables shining, give them a good wax.
Curtains, couches and bedding. Every item is different so pay close attention to the care instructions. Take this time to not only clean the upholstery but vacuum out the crevices of the couches and flip your mattresses. For a really deep and crisp clean: call in the big guns. Having your couches and upholstery professionally cleaned at least once a year can make a huge difference for your home.
Vacuum and shampoo those bad boys. Take your time with the vacuum to make sure you are getting all the debris and dust that you can. If shampooing the carpets yourself, be sure you spend a lot of time to soak up the water and dry the carpets properly. If water or cleaner is left behind in the carpet it just makes things worse. Professional help in this case can take a big load off your shoulders.
Whether you have tile, hardwood or vinyl- its all gotta get clean. Do more than just mop this spring: scrub, wax, polish and re-seal. Don’t just walk all over your floors, give them the respect they deserve. They will thank you for it by looking nicer and lasting longer.
